The Mike Colalillo Medal of Honor Scholarship
Veterans’ Memorial Hall, a program of the St. Louis County Historical Society, announces the creation of a new Scholarship available for History Majors and Minors who reside in St. Louis County. The deadline for the first round is April 15, 2011, and all applications should be sent to:

What is it?
This is a $500 annual scholarship, which will be awarded to an active St. Louis County college student in honor of Mike Colalillo. Mr. Colalillo was awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroic actions during World War II and today is the only known surviving World War II Medal of Honor recipient in the state of Minnesota.
What is Veterans’ Memorial Hall looking for?
We are looking for college students to produce a military history project relevant to St. Louis County, Minnesota, veterans in the form of a research paper. It should be a minimum of three (3) and a maximum of ten (10) double-spaced pages in length, including listed sources. Research papers must include a bibliography and must follow the Chicago Manual of Style.
Examples of projects would be a research paper on the history of:
- an Army or Navy Reserve center in St. Louis County, MN
- Gold Star Mothers of St. Louis County, MN
- a veterans’ memorial in St. Louis County, MN
- the 125th Field Artillery’s service during World War II
- Duluth’s B Company Marine Reserve unit’s service during the Korean War
- the 148th Fighter Wing’s service during Operation Iraqi Freedom
- an American Legion/VFW post in St. Louis County, MN
It is our hope that this scholarship will not only help college students complete college but will also create new discussions around the topic of local veterans’ history.
