Every academic semester we offer three different internships. All internship are unpaid unless stated otherwise.

Collection Internship

The VMH Collection Internship will have one of the most important roles as we upload photos and information on our artifacts in our collection. In order to complete this task we will need help with photographing artifacts and researching their history. This will bring you in direct contact with many interesting and important artifacts within our collection where you will find artifacts from the Civil War, such as cannon ball to the Global War on Terror, such as a series of Gifts to a local veteran from Kurdish Soldiers. The most important skill required is attention to details.

Research Internship

If you enjoy researching military and social history, this is the internship for you. Northeastern Minnnesota has had a quite unique history, but much of it has never been collected on paper. In particular, many of the distinguished veterans of the area have not been properly researched. Your research may be potentially used in our next $100,000 exhibit or on our website. Because so much has not been researched, we have quite an array of options to choose from. Your work could be used for a class paper or even a UROP.

Marketing Internship

This internship will help with the planning, organizing, promotion, and setup of various events and fund raising drives of VMH. Events are a vital part to the success of VMH, because it is at these events that we raise public awareness of the museum, and also where we raise money to pay for our exhibits and operations. Another large aspect of this internship would be assisting with grant writing and donor solicitation. Through this internship you will have the opportunity to meet with some of the largest donors and businesses in town. This is definitely the most active internship we offer, and at times it may be very intense. If you are looking to get a mixture of all three or a couple of them we are very flexible so that our program matches your educational goals.

One of the side benefits is our TOURS FOR INTERNS

Tours for Interns was established to provide interns with a knowledge of the museum world of northeast Minnesota. Twice in their internship they will be brought to a different museum in the Twin Ports region. At some locations they will be given inside tours of their facilities and told a little about work in the museum environment. This was established to provide interns an idea of how other museums operate and as a reward for their work. Some of the possible choices include Glensheen, Fairlawn, Karpeles Manuscript Museum, and the Bong Heritage Center.
