MACKEY Jr, John Gustav

John Gustav Mackey Jr. was born on December 19th 1920 to John Nick & Aina Wilhelmiina [Itänen] Mackey in Cedar Valley Township, Minnesota.

Mr. Mackey entered into the U.S. Army on October 6th 1942, at Fort Snelling, Minnesota. Home at entry: Hibbing, Minnesota.

He served as a truck driver with Company D of the 126th Engineer Battalion. He fought in ground combat in Northern Apennines and Po Valley, Italy. He rose to the rank of Technician 5th Grade. (TEC5).

TEC5 Mackey earned the following merits for his service:

  • Good Conduct Medal,
  • American Campaign Medal,
  • European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with 3 bronze battle stars,
  • World War II Victory Medal,   -and-
  • one overseas service bar.

 

He was honorably discharged on December 5th 1945, at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin. After the war he returned home and married Esther [Agnes] and they started a family.

Mr. Mackey died on September 30th 1983 at 62 years of age in Hibbing. He is buried at Maple Hill Cemetery in Hibbing.
