John Osborn Milne was born on July 1st 1839 In Pocasset, Massachussets to Alexander & Elizabeth Ann (Osborn) Milne. He moved to northern Minnesota in 1857(8?).
Upon hearing of the outbreak of the Civil War, Mr. Milne made the trek to Ft. Snelling in Minneapolis on foot to volunteer for the war effort. He enlisted in the 1st Minnesota Volunteer Infantry, and assigned to Co. I on June 1st 1861 and served as a Private (PVT).
His unit saw action immediatley during the 1st Battle of Bull Run where he was wounded and left for dead. Later retrieved by Confederate forces, PVT Milne was held as a prisoner of war in Richmond, VA. He was later released as a part of a prisoner exchange in December 1861 and returned to family in Massachussets.
While back home he was married in 1868 to Miss Minnie Bronson, of Fall River, Mass. and they moved back to Minnesota in 1870. He moved to Duluth in 1890 and served as School Board President for a time as well as serving as Senator representing the area.
He died in Duluth on September 5th 1907 at 68 years of age. He is buried at Forest Hill Cemetery in Duluth.
