The de Fleury medal was named after French engineer Francois Louis Tesseidre de Fleury, who volunteered to serve with the American Army in the fight for independence from Britain during the Revolutionary War. On October 1, 1779, he was praised for courage under fire by the first Continental Congress of the U.S.”
