“I was drafted into the Army in August 1954. I took my first eight weeks of basic training at Camp Chaffee, Arkansas. I was then transferred to Fort Sill, Oklahoma, for my second eight weeks of training in the field artillery. Then I was assigned Fort Benning, Georgia, for about three months and then was given an option of going to Germany or Korea. I had no preference, so they shipped me to Korea for the rest of my two years.”
