The following was taken from an interview by Hannah Davis, a student at Ordean Middle School.

Sterling served on active duty in the Marines from September, 1951 to 1953. He was also in the Marine Reserve for 6 years on non-active duty. As a corporal his duties included radio repair and airwing service, in which he fixed and checked planes for the pilots.
