MAXIE, Charles Lee

Charles Lee Maxie was born on April 26th 1938 to Claude Johnson & Mabel [Sproles] Maxie in Natchez, Mississippi.

Mr. Maxie enterd the U.S. Army; Home at entry: Hibbing, Minnesota. Before going off to war, he married Anna Marie [Zito].

His tour of Vietnam began on September 25th 1965. His specialty was as a armor crewman. He served with the 1st Infantry Division, 1st Battalion, 4th Cavalry, A Troop. He rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant (SSGT).

SGT Maxie was killed in action on August.19th 1966. He was hit by small arms fire in South Vietnam. He was just 28 years of age.

He earned the following merits for his service:

  • National Defense Service Medal,
  • Army Good Conduct Medal,
  • Army Presidential Unit Citation,
  • Vietnam Campaign Medal,
  • Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation,
  • Vietnamese Civic Action 1st Class,
  • Vietnam Service Medal, -and-
  • the Purple Heart (posthumously).

 

He is buried at Roselawn Cemetery in Pueblo, Colorado. He is also honored on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington, DC.
