Albert V. Asleson

Albert V. Asleson served in World War II in the Pacific Theater.

He joined the U.S. Navy in June 1943 and was assigned to the Construction Brigades (SeaBees) 33rd Battalion and 4th Battalion. He served on Guadalcanal, the Green Islands, the Solomon Islands, Peleliu, Guam, and Okinawa, among others. He was discharged in January 1946.

His rank was Motor Machinist 3rd Class.

Mr. Asleson’s unit received a Unit Commendation for constructing an airstrip in the Green Island Group, part of the Australian Territory of New Guinea, in a record-breaking nineteen days’ time.

Mr. Asleson was born in 1925 in Greenbush, Minnesota, the son of Asle and Nedalne Asleson.

“I started at Guadalcanal. Went to Green Island, built an airstrip in nineteen days, received a unit commendation. To Peleliu, repaired airstrip there. Then Guam. Joined the 4th Battalion then on to Okinawa. Was there at end of war. Went home.

“Began with 33rd Battalion at Solomon Islands.”
