STILINOVICH, Anthony Joseph

Anthony Joseph Stilinovich was born on June 8th 1925 to Nick John & Mary [Hyduke] Stilinovich in Hibbing, Minnesota.

Mr. Stilinovich enlisted in the U.S. Marines Corps Reserves on September 16th 1943. Home at entry: Hibbing, Minnesota.

He served as a radio operator with Company A of the Signal Battalion of the Fifth Amphibious Corps in the Pacific. He participated in action against Japanese on Iwo Jima, including the invasion on February 19th 1945. He rose to the rank of Corporal (CPL).

CPL Stilinovich received the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious service on Iwo Jima on February 28th 1945. Served with the occupation forces at Sasebo, Japan.

He also earned the following merits for his service:

  • Bronze Star Medal,
  • Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with 1 bronze battle star,
  • World War II Victory Medal,  -and-
  • Navy Occupation Medal (Japan).

 

He was honorably discharged on February 5th 1946, at Great Lakes, Illinois. After the war he returned home and married Frances Marie [Gazich]

Mr. Stilinovich died on August 10th 2003 at 78 years of age. He is buried at Maple Hill Cemetery in Hibbing.
