Arthur M. Butler

Mr. Butler served in WWII.
He joined the U.S. Army on June 11, 1942. He was assigned to the 363rd Service Squadron. He served in the Pacific. He was discharged on October 5, 1945 with a rank of Corporal.
He was born in December of 1921 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He is the son of Nils and Adelia Butler. His father died when he was 1 year old and his mother then remarried. He graduated from Goose Lake School in Balsam Lake, Wisconsin.

“After induction, Art went to St. Louis for basics. He was trained to be a truck driver, fueling airplanes, as he was Army Air Force. He then went to Hawaii where he was for about a year. He then went to the Gilbert Islands where he landed with the invasion forces on Tarawa. He spent six months there with air raids everyday for the first month. He went back to Hawaii for a five-day leave and then boarded ship headed for Iwo Jima. Art landed on Iwo on the third day of the invasion and spent six weeks living in a foxhole. He was granted a forty-five day leave and on his way home Japan surrendered.”
