Carl James Matel of Duluth was born Nov. 11, 1918. He attended Cathedral High School in Duluth and St. Mary's College in Winona, Minn.

He served as an artillery specialist in the European Theater of operations during World War II.

He died Oct. 14, 2002.

His son, 1st Lt. Ronald Matel, died in action in 1969 in Vietnam.
