Charles W. McKerrihan Jr. enlisted in the Army on June 16, 1942.

He was a Private First Class and an infantryman with Company C, 407th Infantry Regiment in northern France, the Rhineland and Central Europe.

"We ran into heavy mortar and machine gun fire. Four got killed and 14 wounded when we decided to surrender. I was a prisoner for only four days and was liberated by the 82nd Airborne Division on May 3, 1945, at Schwerin, Germany."

Mr. McKerrihan received the: Bronze Star, Combat Infantryman Badge, Good Conduct Medal, Prisoner of War Medal, European-African-Middle East Campaign Service Medal with three bronze battle stars and American Campaign Service Medal.

He was discharged on Oct. 31, 1945.
