=======================================================

Charles Robert Carlberg of Duluth was inducted into the Army on Feb. 26, 1943. He was a private first class and a rifleman with Company I, 85th Infantry Regiment, 10th Mountain Division, serving in the Mediterranean campaign.

In his words: "We landed in the harbor at Naples, went up the coast to Livarno and then to the North Apennines where the Germans were well dug in. Got as far as Hill 913 . . . where I was wounded and had to be evacuated to the 34th Army General Hospital. A month later, I returned to my outfit. We ended up at the base of the Alps when the war finally ended. I returned to the States via Liberty Ship. I arrived home in Duluth on V-J Day. Duluth celebrated that night. Uptown it was really crazy!"

He received the Purple Heart, Combat Infantryman Badge, Good Conduct Medal, European-African-Middle East Campaign Service Medal, American Campaign Service Medal and an overseas service bar. He was discharged on Nov. 5, 1945.
