Chester "Chet" Root, Sr.

Chester "Chet" Root, Sr. served in World War II joining the Navy in July 1942. He served in the Pacific Theater. 

He was discharged on May 22, 1945.

He trained at both Navy and Marine boot camps and in New Zealand and Hawaii. He was a Pharmacist Mate with the Navy attached to the Marine Corps.

He fought at Saipan, Tarawa, and Tinian, the Mariana Islands, and was at Tinian when the area was cleared in preparation for the Atomic Bomb Squadron’s use.

Mr. Root was injured and recovered in Guadalcanal and then Sun Valley, Idaho, Convalescent Hospital.

Mr. Root was decorated with the Purple Heart.

Chester Root now lives in Cook, Minnesota with his lovely wife Jessie. They moved here from California to live near their son Chester Jr. and his family.

Chester (Chet) entered the Navy in July 1942, trained at boot camps with both the Navy and Marines. He was a Pharmacist Mate with the United States. Navy attached to the Marine Corps. He also trained in New Zealand and Hawaii.

Chester was in the front lines of battles in Saipan ,Tarawa and Tinian, The Mariana Islands. He was at Tinian for the clearing of the area that later became the take off place for the Atomic Bomb Squadron.

Following his being wounded in action he was brought to a hospital in Guadalcanal, then spent six month recuperating in the Sun Valley, Idaho Convalescent Hospital.

Chet was awarded the Purple Heart for his actions.

He was discharged from the service on May 22, 1945.
