Source: Veterans’ Memorial Hall veteran history form; veteran’s account follows:

“It was a cold and stormy night during the Battle of The Bulge. We were transferring patients farther back, to make room for all the casualties coming in. I had charge of four German prisoners who were so glad to be out of the fighting, that they were laughing and talking in their native language. After taking several patients out of the tents to ambulances, our next patient was a pitiful sight of a man who had lost both legs; all talking stopped and in the silence you could read everyone’s mind. This could have been me, and war is such a major tragedy. Even the winners lose.”
