Eugene J. Nyquist

Eugene J. Nyquist entered the Army in 1935. Home at entry: Soudan, Minnesota.

He served as a Chief Warrant Officer with the Army Quartermaster Corps in the Philippines. Stationed at Fort Lincoln, North Dakota, prior to transfer to Zamboanga, Philippines. Was able to take his wife with him to the Philippines.

Fought in the battle of Corregidor and was captured by the Japanese. Survived the Bataan Death March to be sent to a prisoner-of-war camp in the Philippines. After 28 months was being moved on an unmarked Japanese "Hell Ship" called Oryoko Maru. When the Oryoko Maru was en route to Japan, it was hit by a U.S. Navy torpedo and sank. Date of death listed by the U.S. is December 14, 1944.
