VIITALA, Everett Matthew

Everett Matthew Viitala was born on April 30th 1919 to Matt & Mary Fanny [Frasa] Viitala in Mountain Iron, Minnesota. He went to Mt. Iron Schools.. 

Mr. Viitala was inducted into the U.S. Army Air Corps on December 2nd 1941, at Fort Snelling in Minneapolis, Minnesota during WWII.

Mr. Viitala served as a medical NCO with the 366th Bombardment Squadron of the 305th Bomb Group in the air offensive of Europe, Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes, and Central Europe. He rose to the rank of Corporal (CPL).

CPL Viitala earned the following merits for his service:

  • Presidential Unit Citation,
  • Good Conduct Medal,
  • American Defense Service Medal,
  • European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with 6 bronze battle stars,
  • World War II Victory Medal,  -and-
  • six overseas service bars.

 

Mr. Viitala was honorably discharged on October 12th 1945, at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin. After the war he returned home and married Marjorie Mae [Ekstrom] and they started a family.

Mr. Viitala died on March 29th 1990 at 70 years of age in Virginia, Minnesota..
