Frank Mavetz

Frank L. Mavetz of Ely, Minnesota was inducted into the Army on Feb. 2, 1942.

He was a Sergeant and an infantry squad leader with the 21st Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division, 6th Army in Hollandia, New Guinea; Panoan Islands and on Leyte, Mindoro, Mindinao in the Philippines. He was twice wounded in action on May 5 and June 12, 1945 on Mindinao.

"Never had a furlough in 44 months, only a four-day pass to Honolulu. I was lucky to be alive as my company was trapped on ridge on Leyte and survived a terrible shelling from railway mountain gun (90 to 120 m.m.) on May 5 on Talomo River Ridge...."

Mr. Mavetz received the: Bronze Star, Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Service Medal, Philippine Liberation Medal and World War II Victory Medal.
