Gaylord M. Dewey

Gaylord M. Dewey was inducted into the U.S. Army on November 2, 1942.

He was sent to Camp Wolters, Texas for two months of basic training and then to an Army base in Pennsylvania for further training. He was assigned to the 60th Infantry Training Battalion, Company B. He was discharged on October 17, 1945. His rank was Corporal (T-5)

Mr. Dewey was awarded the Purple Heart. Good Conduct Medal, a bronze battle star,and overseas service bars.

Mr. Dewey was born in Freetown, Indiana, in 1920, the son of A.M. and Edna Dewey.

“From basic training to Pennsylvania for a short time for training. Went to New York to board a ship to Casablanca (eleven-day trip). Put on rail cars to join the fighting in Tunisia. The day before we arrived, that operation was over. We met the troop trains coming out. Our company was split up and put into replacement. I spent fifteen months in North Africa doing cleanup. This is where I received my Purple Heart in the air raid. Then spent fifteen months in Italy (Naples). I was a cook until I was discharged.
