Hubert Carl Johnson of Eveleth, Minnesota enlisted in the Navy on September 11, 1939 at Minneapolis, Minn.

He served as a Chief Watertender aboard the cruiser USS Portland (CA 33). From 1939 to the end of war, he participated in actions in the Coral Sea and Midway, with the capture and defense of Guadalcanal and Tulagi, and in the Eastern Solomons landings. He also saw action in the Santa Cruz Islands, the Gilbert Islands, the Marshall Islands, in other Pacific raids at Hollandia, Western Carolines, Leyte, Luzon, Manila, and Okinawa.

Mr. Johnson was awarded the: Navy Unit Commendation, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with sixteen bronze battle stars, American Defense Service Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.

He was honorably discharged on October 22, 1945 at Lido Beach, Long Island, N.Y.
