GLAVAN, John Louis

John Louis Glavan was born on July 5th 1914 to John & Mary [Verdick] Glavan in Ely, Minnesota.

Mr. Glavan was inducted into the Army on June 11th 1942 at Fort Snelling, Minnesota.

He served as a Technical Sergeant and platoon sergeant with Company I of the 47th Infantry Regiment of the 9th Infantry Division. 

SGT Glavan's unit fought in Algeria, French Morocco, Tunisia, North Africa; Sicily, Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe.

He was wounded in action on March, 1945, in Europe.

Mr. Glavan was awarded the following:

  • Purple Heart,
  • Combat Infantryman Badge,
  • European-African-Middle East Campaign Medal,  -and-
  • five overseas service bars.

 

He was honorably discharged July 15th 1945 at Fort Snelling, Minnesota.

After the war, he returned home and married fellow Veteran Mayme Rose Chernivetz and they started a family. 

Mr. Glavan died on November 16th 1965 in the Twin Cities at the age of 51 and was buried at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery.
