DUNN, John Robert

John Robert Dunn was born on October 16th 1918 to John & Signa [Ekstrom] Dunn in Chisholm, Minnesota.

Mr. Dunn of Hibbing, Minnesota registered in the U.S. Naval Reserve on April 16th 1941. He enlisted in the service on February 8th 1942.

He served as a pilot and flight instructor in the United States and the Pacific Theater during WWII. He was commissioned a Lieutenant. (LT).

LT Dunn was assigned as a pilot and flight officer aboard the aircraft carrier USS Bunker Hill, a pilot and engineering officer with the Scout Observation Service Unit (SOSU) aviation unit and senior aviator aboard the USS Boston.

He earned the following merits for his service:

  • Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with 1 bronze battle star, 
  • American Campaign Medal, 
  • American Defense Service Medal with 1 bronze star,  -and-
  • World War II Victory Medal.

 

LT. Dunn was honorably discharged on January 1st 1946 and returned home. Mr. Dunn died on January 11th 1989 at 70 years of age.
