Laverne E. Miller

Laverne E. Miller enlisted in the Army Nurses Corps on March 2, 1943.

She was commissioned Captain and served as a registered nurse in the European Theater.

Ms. Miller shares the following: "From September 12, 1943, to April 17, 1945, I was at the Station Hospital in England and Scotland treating wounded from Europe. On November 30, 1944, I was assigned as chief nurse. The population of the wounded became so high we nurses gave up our heated quarters and moved to quarters barely or unheated.'

"From staying in unheated quarters, I developed chronic rheumatoid arthritis and was sent back to the U.S. on the USS Lewis A. Milney hospital ship on April 1, 1945. I was hospitalized in the U.S. from April 17 to July 9, 1945. I was back in the hospital several times."

Ms. Miller was awarded the following: American Campaign Medal ,European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal ,World War II Victory Medal and three overseas service bars.

She received a medical discharge from the Army in April 23, 1946.
