Melvin O. Nelson of Meadowlands, Minnesota was inducted into the Army on November 20, 1942.

He was a Private First Class and an automatic rifleman in Company G of the 124th Infantry Regiment in the New Guinea and Southern Philippines campaigns. He was wounded in action in Mindinao on May 15, 1945.

Mr. Nelson received the Purple Heart, Combat Infantryman Badge, Bronze Star Medal (awarded March 30, 1994), Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Service Medal with two bronze battle stars and bronze arrowhead, Philippine Liberation Medal with one bronze star,  American Campaign Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal, and three overseas service bars.

He was discharged December 23, 1945.
