CAVALIERI, Nando "Tony" Angelo

Nando Angelo Cavalieri was born on January 26th 1921 to Frank & Josephine Cavalieri in Eveleth, Minnesota. By 1930 the family had moved to the Chicago area.

Mr. Cavalieri attended high school at Lane Technology in Cook County, Illinois. There he entered military service on February 16th 1942 as an airman in the Army Air Corps in the European Theater of WWII. He rose to the rank of Captain. He was killed during an bombing run on an airfield over Germany.

On February 3rd 1945, Captain Cavalieri was serving as a bombadier on a B-17G Flying Fortress. They were on a bombing mission with the target being Berlin-Gatow airfield. They were the lead aircraft when their bomber was struck by enemy fire and it broke into two pieces and crashed.

Capt.Cavalieri’s bomber was one of 21 to be lost during the mission. German forces reportedly recovered his body and ID tags after the crash. He was buried in Döberitz, Germany, on February 7th 1945. His name is memorialized at Margraten American Cemetery in the Netherlands.He was 24 years old.


UPDATE: Army Air Forces Capt. Nando A. Cavalieri, 24, was accounted for July 27, 2021, according to the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA).
