Peter J. Basil was born and raised in Chicago, where he attended school. He served in the Army Air Corps during the 1920s. During World War II, he joined the Marine Corps and was a staff sergeant.
After the war, he married Harriet Lathers, whom he had met during his Marine Corps service, and they moved to Duluth, Minnesota where they operated a frame and photography shop. He died in 1958.
