Robert Sam Aluni of Virginia was inducted into the Naval Reserve on July 26, 1943. He was a storekeeper 2nd class in the European-African-Middle East and Asiatic-Pacific Theaters.He was wounded in action as a crew member aboard the Destroyer Escort U.S.S. Rich (DE 695) when it was sunk in the English Channel during the 1944 D-Day invasion of Normandy.He returned to the United States and was assigned to a new ammunition ship. In the Pacific he participated in the Okinawa campaign and bombardment of Japan.He received the Purple Heart, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Service Medal, European-African-Middle East Campaign Service Medal and World War II Victory Medal. He was discharged on May 4, 1946.
