PANULA, Roy Edwin

Roy Edwin Panula was born on March 23rd 1923 to Herman & Hilma Aleksandria [Laihi] Panula in Duluth, Minnesota.

Mr. Panula of Meadowlands, Minnesota was inducted into the U.S. Army on December 20th 1943 during WWII. Just before departing for the war her married Taimi Irene [Joki] on November 13th 1943.

Roy was a truck driver with the 223rd ordnance Heavy Maintenance Company (Tanks) in the Rhineland and Central Europe. He rose to the rank of Technician 4th Grade (TEC4).

TEC Panula earned the following merits for his service:

  • Good Conduct Medal,
  • European-African-Middle East Campaign Service Medal with 2 bronze battle stars,
  • American Campaign Service Medal,
  • World War II Victory Medal,  -and-
  • an overseas service bar.

 

He was honorably discharged on May 1st 1946. After the war he returned home to his wife and they started a family.

Mr. Panula died on January 22nd 1993 at 69 years of age in Craighead Arkansas. He is buried at Maple Hill Cemetery in Hibbing, Minnesota.
