LUNDSTROM, Roy

Roy Lundstrom was born on July 26th 1926 in Duluth, Minnesota, the son of Roy Sr. & Florence Gunhild [Sandberg] Lundstrom.

Mr. Lundstrom joined the U.S. Navy in June 1944.and served in World War II in the Pacific Theater.

He served on the Sumner-class destroyer the USS James C. Owens (DD-776). The ship went to Okinawa, then traveled in the China Sea intercepting kamikazes. Mr. Lundstrom was discharged in June 1946. His rank was Seaman 1st Class (S1c).

S1c Lundstrom was honorably discharged on June 7th 1946. After the war, he returned home to Duluth, married Mary Carol Harrom on May 5th 1950 and started a family.

Roy Jr. died on October 6th 2020 and is buried at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery near Duluth, Minnesota.

“Commissioned the destroyer in California. Traveled to Okinawa where we worked out of doing what was called ‘picket duty’ in the China Sea, intercepting suicide planes coming to destroy the U.S. fleet—got a few.

“After the atomic bombs were dropped, we were assigned to secure all Jap ports from the south end to Tokyo Bay with a radio ship.

Before the USS Missouri (BB-63) came to accept the surrender, we had many dignitaries come out in sampans to surrender.”
