HENSEN, Sidney William

Sidney William Henson was born on April 22nd 1917 to Byron & May Violet [Campbell] Henson in Duluth, Minnesota.

Mr. Henson was inducted into the U.S. Navy on May 9th 1944 at Duluth, Minnesota, and served during World War II in the Pacific Theater.

He served as an Electrician's Mate 3rd Class aboard the destroyer escort USS Vammen (DE 644). He was on convoy escort duty in the Philippines on radar picket ship duty. He participated in the Invasion of Okinawa, 1945. The ship hit a floating mine and was repaired in the Philippines.

Mr. Henson was awarded the following:

  • Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with 1 bronze battle star,
  • American Campaign Medal,
  • Philippine Liberation Medal,  -and-
  • World War II Victory Medal.

 

He was honorably discharged December 24th 1945 at Bremerton, Washington. After the war he returned home and married Caroline Thelma Louise [Quandee] and they started a family.

Mr. Henson died on August 17th 1999 at the age of 82 years. He is buried at Forest Hill Cemetery in Duluth, Minnesota.
