Stephen Gheen enlisted in the Navy on July 21, 1942.

He was placed on active status February 9th, 1942. He was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant on November 9, 1943.

He was stationed on the west coast until July of 1945 when he was transferred to the Marine Corps.

Stephen served as a pilot on torpedo bombers aboard the USS Salerno Bay in the Pacific. He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant.

He returned to the States on December 4, 1945.
