FAGERSTROM, Swaney Fred

Swaney Fred Fagerstrom was born on July 17th 1917 to Johannes & Ellen Charlotta [Hendricksen] Fagerstrom in Duluth, Minnesota.

Mr. Fagerstrom was inducted into the U.S. Army on December 19th 1942 at Fort Snelling in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

He served as a airplane crew chief with the 3rd Air Commando Group of the 4th Fighter Squadron-Commando of the Army Air Corps in the Ryukyu Islands, Air Offensive-Japan, China, Southern Philippines, Luzon and Western Pacific. He rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant (SSGT).

SGT Fagerstrom earned the following merits for his service:

  • Good Conduct Medal,
  • Distinguished Unit Citation,
  • Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal,
  • American Campaign Medal,
  • Philippine Liberation Medal,
  • World War II Victory Medal,  -and-
  • two overseas service bars.

 

He was honorably discharged on January 7th 1946 at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin. After the war he returned home and married Janet Louise Lundgren.

Mr. Fagerstrom died on April 11th 2004 at 86 years of age. He is buried at Oneota Cemetery in Duluth.
