TINTOR, Vladimir Floyd

Vladimir Floyd Tintor was born on August 22nd 1923 to Eli & Helen [Bratzo] Tintor in Hibbing, Minnesota.

Mr. Tintor entered the U.S. Army on June 2nd 1943, at Fort Snelling, Minnesota. Home at entry: Hibbing, Minnesota.

He served as a gun crewman in light artillery with Battery B of the 616th Field Artillery Battalion of the 10th Mountain Division in Northern Apennines and Po Valley, Italy. He rose to the rank of Corporal (CPL).

Recollection of his sons: “While in Italy after coming into position, the division set their guns and started to dig foxholes. About two a.m. the German artillery began to shell the position with 170 MM. shells and I was trembling so much, I tell you, I really prayed that night. One kid next to me got hit in the leg with shrapnel.

"One night, we were riding to a certain point when the battery commander came by our trucks and told us to dismount and get into a ditch. The Germans ambushed us and set our ammunition truck on fire. A truckload of Germans came down the road. At first, we didn’t know it was them and thought it was one of our own. We opened up on them with machine guns and got some of them, others got away.

"We didn’t know how far ahead of the infantry we were. Next day, we found a wine house and drank champagne all day. Our battery was the first to cross the Poe River.”

CPL Tintor earned the following merits for his service:

  • Good Conduct Medal,
  • American Campaign Medal,
  • European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with two bronze battle stars,  -and-
  • World War II Victory Medal.

CPL Tintor was honorably discharged on February 11th 1946, at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin. After the war he returned home and marrid Phyllis Elaine [Trezise] on August 27th 1949 and they started a family.

Mr. Tintor died on his 70th birthday on August 22nd 1993. He is buried at Maple Hill Cemetery in Hibbing.
