Walter Aaron Backman

BACKMAN, Walter Aaron 

Walter Aaron Backman was born on May 28th 1921.

Mr. Backman entered the Army Air Corps on May 19th 1942, at St. Louis, Missouri. Home at entry: Chisholm, Minnesota.

He served as a navigator with the Army Air Corp in Europe. Wounded in combat in January 1944 in Europe. He rose to the rank of First Lieutenant (1LT).

LT Backman earned the following merits for his service:

  • Purple Heart,
  • Air Medal with three oak leaf clusters,
  • American Defense Service Medal,  -and-
  • European-African-Middle Eastern Medal.

 

He was relieved from active duty on September 23rd 1945, at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin.

Mr. Backman was recalled to active duty during the Korean War on B29's.
