Wilfred "Swede" "Bill" George Hanson

Wilfred "Swede" "Bill" George Hanson served in the U.S. Marine Corps in World War II in the Pacific Theater, including a tour in China.

He was a Platoon Sergeant and was nicknamed “Swede” while in the service.

He fought in crucial battles in Peleliu, New Guinea, New Britain, the Solomon Islands, and Okinawa.

Mr. Hanson was decorated with a Silver Star, two Purple Hearts, and five battle stars and his accomplishments were recorded in books such as Devil’s Anvil and Brotherhood of Heroes.

He also served during the Korean War.

Bill was born in Superior, Wisconsin. He graduated from Duluth Central High School.

Mr. Hanson died at age 82 on December 31, 2007.
