YONKOVICH, William

William Yonkovich was born on November 24th 1916 to Marko & Jennie [Mundasich] Yonkovich in Chisholm, Minnesota.

Mr. Yonkovich married Anne Marie [Sertich] on October 19th 1940. He was inducted into the U.S. Army on August 26th 1942, at Fort Snelling, Minnesota. Home at entry: Chisholm, Minnesota.

He served with Headquarters and Service Company of the 1881st Engineer Aviation in New Guinea and Leyte Campaigns. He rose to the rank of First Sergeant (1SGT).

SGT Yonkovich earned the following merits for his service:

  • Good Conduct Medal,
  • Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with 2 bronze battle stars,
  • World War II Victory Medal,  -and-
  • Philippine Liberation Medal.

 

He was honorably discharged on September 14th 1945, at General Hospital, Galesburg, Illinois.

Mr. Yonkovich died on October 30th 1984 at 70 years of age. He is buried at Calvary Cemetery in Chisholm.
